DANA GROSS‑RHODE: Welcome to the interview room here at the CN Canadian Women’s Open.  You’re in the clubhouse as the leader 7‑under par 64.  It’s a career low, and it also matches a season‑low on Tour for a par 71.  Everything seemed to be flowing for you out there.  Can you just talk about that?

ANNA RAWSON: It felt great.  I was hitting the ball well last week and just wasn’t scoring or putting well.  Yeah, I just felt great.  I think I missed one green, and just ‑‑ I had a really good feel for the course in the practice round.  It went well.

DANA GROSS‑RHODE: Now, you’re from Australia, the last time the LPGA played on this course, another Australian, Karrie Webb won.  Does that give you any confidence going into tomorrow?

ANNA RAWSON: And last year Katherine Hull won.  I was actually thinking about that coming down the last hole today, ‘It would be great to keep having Australians win.’  Yeah that would be good.

Q. We think you’ve set a course record.

ANNA RAWSON: Oh, really?

Q. Did it feel like a course record?

ANNA RAWSON: Yeah, I felt like I had a good chance on 18, too.  I was just in between yardages and I left it short putter, the putt short.

You know, I really tried today to just stay in the moment.  I’m so good at getting ahead of myself and saying, ‘oh, if I get to three, if I get to four, if I get to 5‑under.’  So I just didn’t even think about it.  I was like, ‘One shot at a time,’ and I’m not surprised of the score.

Q. Does it feel good, I imagine, to get a good round in?

ANNA RAWSON: Oh, yeah, it’s a big relief because I feel like I’ve hit the ball well in so many rounds this year and I just haven’t got anything going.

Q. Dana mentioned 64 is your lowest LPGA round, do you recall having shot that somewhere else?

ANNA RAWSON: Yeah, I shot that this year at the State Farm Classic in Springfield, so, yeah, that was fun.

Q. You need a big finish to the season, obviously you’d like to have a big finish to the season.  Have you done anything in the last little while to tune up your game a little bit more, or is it just not getting ahead of yourself?

ANNA RAWSON: Yeah, I think this year has just been terrible mentally.  Like I’ve just had the worst head that you could ever imagine.  I don’t even want to tell you what’s been going through my head; it’s that bad.  I thought about everything that I shouldn’t.  I really haven’t hit the ball that bad.  I just haven’t been here.  I haven’t been enjoying it, I haven’t been out here.

So I started working with a sports psychologist about a month ago, and you know, just really working on trust and not getting ahead.  You know, all of the things that I’ve worked on before but I’ve maybe forgotten.  I think that’s helping.

Q. What was the best part of your round today?

ANNA RAWSON: The best part?  My iron play was really good.  I think that’s what I’ve struggled with a little bit, as well this, year.  I’ve hit lots of close shots and made all of the putts.  So that’s good.

Q. Four birdies, two bogeys on the front, and the back nine, 5‑under on the hillier parts of the course; that’s encouraging.

ANNA RAWSON: Yeah, it was fun.  Again, I had no idea; like I was just hitting the best shot I could and let’s hit the best putt I could, and the score was kind of adding up.  Maybe in the front I was being a little bit like, oh, I’m under par here.

I finally said, “I’ve got to stay in the moment.”  So I really didn’t even notice.  I couldn’t even tell you what I thought on those holes.

Q. Did you find club selection a challenge here with a little more altitude than you played even last week in Portland?

ANNA RAWSON: My caddie and I did a grit job of working it out.  We played Tuesday and we played yesterday, and we did a really good job on the course.  We totally looked at everything.  Normally I don’t play two practice rounds, but we heard the greens were tricky and so we came out and we knew, like you’ve got to be here.  And when you’re in the right spot, you really only have a 10‑foot.

So no, we didn’t have any problems today.  I over‑shot one green and that was ‑‑ I hit a perfect shot.  I was just in the rough.

Q. Can you just tell us about the two bogeys you did make?

ANNA RAWSON: Okay.  The first one I remember was when I hit it over the green.  I hit my drive in the rough on the right, and then the pin was way at the back and it was a downhill sloping to the right, and I hit it and just ran over the back.  I chipped it to like the slope and missed the putt.

And I don’t remember the other bogey.

Q. Seven.

ANNA RAWSON:  I was plugged until the front bunker, so I didn’t really have a chance to get up‑and‑down.  I was in between yardages and hit a 6‑iron and didn’t quite get all of it and plugged.

Q. Every golfer can identify with the mental struggles of the game.  Can you elaborate maybe on what you went through and how you got there and how you’re coming out of it now?

ANNA RAWSON: Yeah, I guess I’m just worried about the future.  I just felt like I was going on great at the start of the year and some things kind of set me back and I thought, you know, what if I don’t play well and I started to think ahead of myself; you know, maybe golf isn’t what I should be doing.

I have my expectations of myself and I want to be really successful.  I thought, well, if I can’t be successful at golf, I can be successful at some else.  I was on the course thinking, “What am I going to do with my life?  What am I going to do with my life?”  Which is not what you want to be doing.

I sat down with the sports psychologist and he said, “You’re in your year.  You can’t be thinking about next year.  You have to make the most of this year.”  And I really have just been thinking so far ahead that it’s terrible.  It’s the same in my golf game, when I get to 1‑ or 2‑under, I could shoot like 3‑ or 4‑under.  It’s this pattern in my life and my golf; it’s terrible.  I shouldn’t even admit that I don’t think.

I think I lied to my sports psychologist for like the first month, too.  “Yeah, I’m good.”    Then I finally told him, “I’m having doubts about golf.”

Q. You’re a model, correct?

ANNA RAWSON: Yeah, part‑time.

Q. So you have something to lean back on.

ANNA RAWSON: Yeah, that’s exactly ‑‑ like I have that part of my life.  I’m also university‑educated, I studied communication at University of Southern California, and I was going to go into a consultancy; that’s what I was going to do, and then we won the National Championship and I went into golf.  I was never what I was going to do.

So I’ve spent the last five years doing it and I’ve kept improving and I’ve kept succeeding, but I guess I was like, oh, I don’t know.  Maybe I should go pursue the other interests; maybe I could be more successful at that.

Q. The fashion industry, would they not turn their nose up a little bit at golf?

ANNA RAWSON: Yeah, they don’t really – no, we don’t get much traction in the fashion industry, yet.  But we’ve got great fashionistas on Tour.  So it’s only a matter of time until they find out about us.

Q. As far as your connection to Australia with Karrie Webb, do you have a mentor?

ANNA RAWSON: Not specifically with Australians.  I think my sponsor, GoDaddy, their CEO, Bob Parsons, has been amazing to me.  I have played golf with him a couple of times and he just is so encouraging.  He’s such a successful businessman, and I think if he can see talent in me, then I must have it.

So I’ve had a couple of conversations with him and just different people that have really said, you can do this, you can win, just keep going.

Q. And the course here, does it play like an Australian course?  Are there courses down under that are like this?

ANNA RAWSON: Yeah, I guess so.  I mean, the greens are bent.  They are really good.  I can’t really think of a course it’s like.  I guess it works well for me because there’s a lot of short putter holes, I get a lot of wedges.  And the par 3s are really difficult, so I think whoever is hitting their irons best will win.

Q. You mentioned that you like success.  I’m wondering what would constitute success in golf, is it winning a tournament like this one or winning a lot of tournaments?  What do you look for for success?

ANNA RAWSON: Yeah, obviously winning is the peak of success.  Once you’ve won, you’ve really achieved a lot.  That’s the best you can do.

But I mean, just surviving, like making money.  I know it sounds weird but just being able to live the lifestyle that I feel is what I want to live I think is being successful to me.  Even the girls out here that are 90th on the Money List, they are really successful.  They are top one percent in the world at what they do.

I look at it maybe not so harshly as the media does.  They are more like, you have to win and you’re successful.  I think just being out here, playing on Tour, keeping your card and playing out here, I think you’re a really successful woman.

Q. Your score today might be the best, obviously it is the best you’ve shot this year; perhaps it’s a good omen for the next three days.

ANNA RAWSON: I feel great on this golf course.  Sometimes you get to a golf course and you look and you think, oh, there’s two or three holes that just bother you, and you think, how am I going to get through these.  There isn’t really a whole lot here that I’m like, “Oohh.”  That’s really good for me because normally I have one or two, I just want to get through those.  I really like all the holes.  I feel like you can birdie every one, depending where they put the pins.  But I think I’ve just got a good grasp for it in the practice rounds.

CN Canadian Women’s Open – First Round Q&A

Wales

Monday, August 10th, 2009

After the British Open I headed to Northern Wales to play in the Wales Ladies Championship. Surprisingly, we had absolutely gorgeous weather! I had to pinch myself a few times to remind myself where I was. It was the first time I have ever played in the UK when it’s been sunny and we had four amazing days of it!

I felt good about the way I was hitting it and I shot -2 in round one. Round 2 didn’t quite go as hot. I was forcing birdies and you just can’t do that on links golf. I finished with 77 and was highly disappointed. Round 3 was much of the same.  A few bad breaks here and there and your over par. Round 4 I was determined! I stayed focused and patient and ended up with another 70! It was great to get another crack at links golf. I really believe the more you play it the better you get.

Royal St Davids Golf Course was a great track lying right near a huge castle. It was fun to aim at different parts of the castle. It was also right on the ocean, which made the wind an interesting factor. All in all it was so much fun to get back to England. I had plenty of good cups of tea that will hopefully last until my next visit.

For now, I am back on a plane heading home to the states!

My amazing Donna Karan dress!

My amazing Donna Karan dress!

I must say it feels good to be back in the swing of things with training. Time off is great and a necessity, but I just love the routine of training. I don’t even mind my 35-minute drives to Long Beach to work with Dana Dahlquist or my 75-minute drives to work with Ron Stockton. I actually enjoy listening to the radio on my way. My workouts have been great too. Although I can barely move the next day, I know I am giving my body the strength to compete in the last half of the season.

The off time has been great to test some new drivers. I am trying the Taylormade R9 460 and the Callaway FT9, both seem great so it’s going to be a tough decision. I was also excited to receive my sleek GoDaddy head covers to match my awesome tour bag. I can’t wait to get back out on tour and have them on show!

On Wednesday night I had the pleasure of attending the ESPYS. It’s always so fun to get dressed up and attend an awards show. Not to mention very inspiring! I just love to hear the stories of how people became the best at their sport. It makes me want to do better.  I was lucky enough to score an amazing Donna Karan dress, which made me feel like I was shooting for a fashion magazine or about to walk the runway. Normally I go for simple and sexy, especially for the ESPYS, but the Donna Karan dress was so fashion forward and different I just had to do it. I paired it with some gold louboutins, simple gold studs and my hair pulled back. Getting dressed up never gets old – I just love it!

Now I am off to Charlotte to film with Go Daddy NASCAR driver Brad Kieslowski. Very exciting!! Make sure to read next week’s blog to find out what happens.

Springfield

Why is it when I come off my busiest off-week of the year, I have my best playing week of golf? I guess I am built to be a busy person! So many people have asked me what led to such a good result in Springfield (T13 – rounds of 71, 71, 69, 65). To be honest there are numerous reasons.

First, I am so lucky to have such a great sponsor in Go Daddy. Bob Parsons gave me a wonderful pep talk in the off-week. He told me he believes in me and knows I can do this. I cannot tell you how great that feels. It’s so important to have that kind of support and he really made me feel he was behind me 100%.

Second, I put a call into my sports psychologist Bob Rotella. He reminded me that I play best when I am having fun. He said I play the worst when I grind and spend too much time at the golf course. This was such great advice. I flew into Springfield Tuesday afternoon and I only saw about 12 holes of the course and just practiced a little. I rested, had fun and surprise, surprise I got results! It’s so funny how I can make the game so hard for myself.  I’ve watched what other top players were doing and tried to mimic them, but it just doesn’t work. I have to prepare in a way that makes me feel good and that is definitely not grinding out there for days on end.

Thirdly, I went back to basics with my swing. With so many off-weeks this year I had been getting too mechanical. I was trying to get my swing into a better position. For some reason I couldn’t trust this new position under pressure.  I finally decided I don’t care what it looks like as long as I can hit it where I want. And that I did! It was so fun to hit punch shots, draws, fades and know that I could trust it.  In Springfield my confidence and mental trust grew with each round. Last week was so fun to be near the top of the leader board. I am also excited that I shot my career low round 65 in the final round!

As my coach Ron Stockton says “Anna, champions go low on Sundays.”  I like the sound of that!

Don’t forget to tune into the McDonalds LPGA championship this week!

Memorial Weekend at Dodger Stadium

Sybase Classic and NYC

Thursday, May 21st, 2009
Last week I competed in the LPGA Sybase Classic, which was played at Upper Montclair Country Club, in Clifton, NJ. Hopefully you all tuned in to the action on ESPN. I had a fabulous week staying with the Hoit family in Summit, NJ. Seven-time club champion Roger Hoit hosted me at Baltusrol Golf Club on Tuesday, which was a great treat. I would have to say Baltusrol is the prettiest course I have ever seen. I loved the traditional set-up of the clubhouse and the course. Hopefully there will be another U.S. Women’s Open there soon.

On Wednesday, I had a great time at the Sybase Pro-Am. I was fortunate enough to play with the people from Geico Insurance and they certainly knew how to have a good time. I also got some inside information to share with you all. I bet you didn’t know that the Geico lizard was created at a bar and is supposed to have an Australian accent!

Thursday morning I was the first group off, and again I didn’t have such a hot start. I had a new putter in play this week and it took a few holes for me to really get used to it. Everything seemed to be starting left for me off the face. I decided to open up the face on the back nine and the putts started online. I only ended up with one birdie, but made some great pars and finished with +2. It might not have been the best start, but I still felt like there were birdies out there for Friday.

With a late tee time on Friday I went into NYC to see “Guys and Dolls” on Broadway. Wow, what a great show! I just love live performances. The singing and dancing was amazing.

Friday’s round started off flawless. I felt confident and excited for the challenge. My first two shots of the day were pretty much perfect, which is always a good sign. Unfortunately, when I got to 15 (my 6th hole), I started to feel nervous and a little uncertain. It was the strangest thing. After hitting such great shots you would think there would be no reason for me to doubt myself. The mind does crazy things and I just could not get back on track. I ended up with +4 and was extremely disappointed that I had made it so difficult for myself. Thankfully, there is always next week.

Looking on the bright side, I got to explore NYC all weekend.

Michelob Open at Kingsmill

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Last week was such a blast at the Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill, in Virginia. It was my first time at the event, and it lived up to all the expectations. The girls on tour call it the “fifth major!” It’s set up with lots of rough and super fast greens, so it plays risk reward. I just loved the course.

Overall it was a good week. I started poorly the first day +3 after 6, but fought back to shoot even par. I’m happy with the comeback because at times I find it so tough to battle back after being so many over. The second day was a great ball striking round for me. -2 was the worst I could of shot. I hit all fairways and 16 greens but the putts just couldn’t seem to drop. I struggled with line and speed.

After the second round there was a player party at Busch Gardens. Busch Gardens is such a fabulous place! The park was only open to us so we had free reign of the Roller coasters. Wow!! They had the craziest rollercoaster, I haven’t been that scared in a long time. The drops were ridiculous. Up side down, jerking to the side, I honestly doubted my survival. Luckily I ended up with a mild stomachache and some whiplash – not too bad, right?!

Round three was pretty frustrating. It was very humid out and I seemed to be continuing the rollercoaster ride from the night before. Birdie, bogie, Birdie, very frustrating! In the end I was happy to stay in it and shoot +1. Round four on the other hand was terrible. I had a few three putts, and couldn’t seem to get the ball anywhere near the hole with my irons. It didn’t help that the pins were tucked, making your misses that much worse. I finished with +5, which felt like 100! Positive for the day was that I hit all the fairways. I guess my new R9 Taylormade driver (with a stiff shaft J) is working out… if only I can find the perfect putter!

Looking forward to a great week at Upper Montclair Country Club in New Jersey!!

The Beatles LOVE, Cirque du Soleil at the Mirage in Las Vegas

The Beatles LOVE, Cirque du Soleil at the Mirage in Las Vegas

After last week’s disappointment in Mexico, it was great to have a week to work on things. I decided my wedge game simply wasn’t good enough. So after a lesson with Dana Dahlquist, we got the technique squared away. Then it was up to me to grind out the distances. I worked on it every day, and I must say it feels good. I am eager to test it out at this week’s Michelob Ultra Championship.

On Thursday, I headed to Vegas for a little fun before my 3-week stretch on the road. It was great to play the beautiful Wynn course again, which was much easier the second time around!

The buzz in Vegas was great on Friday. There were so many people in town for the Pacquiao/Hatton fight. Unfortunately, I missed seeing it in person because I had to head to Virginia early Saturday for the LPGA Summit. I had been watching the 24/7 specials on HBO and was thinking it was going to be a close match…not so much.

Even though I missed the Friday fight, I was fortunate enough to see LOVE, The Beatles Cirque du Soleil show at The Mirage. Amazing! LOVE celebrates the musical legacy of The Beatles through their timeless, original recordings. I was actually singing along through pretty much the whole show. There was such a youthful, raw energy, which was channeled through aerial performance, extreme sports and urban freestyle dance. Definitely a must see, especially if you are a Beatles fan!

Reminder: Don’t forget to tune in this weekend to The Michelob Ultra LPGA Classic!

Corona Championship

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

On Monday evening I headed down to Morelia Mexico for the LPGA’s Corona Championship. I was definitely excited to compete – 3 weeks off is too long!

I had been to Morelia last year and was excited to go back. The tournament is very well organized and the clubhouse is absolutely amazing! The golf course is a little unusual (you never get a flat lie) but it is always in great shape and this year was no exception.

Tuesday I gave a clinic to the members of Tres Marias. It was fun to hit some shots for them and answer all of their questions. It was funny how intrigued they were with my relationship with my caddy! I told them it’s like a marriage!! Ha ha

After the clinic I headed out for 18 holes, then I popped into the pro-am party before heading back to the hotel for a rest. Wednesday I played in the morning pro-am and then practiced. I felt good about the course and my game, I knew if I could trust myself I would do well.

I had a great start, was 1 under through 8 and playing very steady. The back nine can be tricky so I was keeping it simple. I then had a minor disaster on 17 but then birdie putts on all of my remaining holes! Other than a three put at 2 and a two-putt birdie at 8 my scorecard was uneventful. I just couldn’t seem to get the ball in the hole!

The next day was much of the same. My goal was 3 birdies a side at least! I managed that on the front – but with two bogies! Unfortunately, I had a bogie and 8 pars on the back. I thought I would make the cut on the number but there had been so many good scores so I ended up missing by one! I guess I didn’t deserve to play the weekend.

I must admit I was probably lacking in trust over all my shots. It’s proving difficult to keep my head into it with all the time off. I know I will get into a better rhythm when I have a few events in a row.

Anna Hits the Red Carpet

Anna Hits the Red Carpet

After being away for a few weeks it is nice to get back into my Los Angeles groove. I have a full routine for my practice days and I love it.

Every morning starts with coffee – decaff organic preferably (my trainer says its better), I never need the caffeine in the morning, I am always psyched to start the day!  I usually spend a half hour returning emails and setting my calendar, then its off to breakfast. I try to find  new places but I always end up at the same ones. Urth cafe, City Bakery, Joans on Third and Clementine  are my favorites!  I try to eat a lot in the morning to keep my energy and focus for golf training. I then train for 3-6 hours or sometimes longer if I play 18.  Then its home for some more coffee and emails then off to the gym!  I am not a big workout person but I love the feeling afterwards.

This Monday I went to the Observe and Report premiere? It was so fun to watch my golf buddy Mike Pena star in the movie! He was hilarious! You can check out the red carpet pics at www.wireimage.com (search: Anna Rawson).

I am looking forward to heading to sin city this weekend!  I’ll let you know how it goes….

KOGI: serving kimchi tacos, best late night food in L.A.

Hey this is Anna, I have so much to catch you up on!

First of all, I want to announce that I am the newest GoDaddy Girl! I am so honored to work with such a thriving, dynamic company! I was able to spend some time with Bob Parsons before the Go Daddy photo-shoot and he was a smart and energetic guy. It’s going to be so much fun playing with him in the pro-am on Wednesday! I hear we are also playing with Alice Cooper. Keep an eye out for not only my weekly blog but we have a lot of exciting things planned for this year.

The last three weeks have been crazy busy. Off-weeks are always much busier than tournament weeks. Actually, I can’t really call them off-weeks, because I am usually working on and off the golf course.

Last week, I participated in LA fashion week, which is always a blast. I was fortunate enough to be selected to walk the David Alexander show. David is an amazing, up and coming designer, best known for being the mastermind behind Britney Spears comeback style. He actually left this week to go on tour with Britney, and they will be using a 60 pound Swarovski Crystal corset from the show. Fashion shows are always long days. So much preparation goes into a 10 minutes of runway. I arrived at the Los Angeles Theatre at 2pm for hair and makeup and the show didn’t start till 5.30pm! Lucky, I had my Kindle to read!

David was incredible to work with and was surprisingly calm and collected. Fashion designers can get so uptight and stressed before a show. Thankfully David nailed it – look out for his designs in a store near you!

After the show, I was exhausted and decided to skip the after parties and go eat. I went with some friends to the Alibi Room, and ate Korean Kim chi tacos. The chef is named Kogi. He is a Korean-American who grew up in Los Angeles in a latino neighborhood eating off of taco trucks. His Korean taco truck has become so famous that he twitters his location and within minutes a line gathers, which is known to be three hours long! The tacos were ridiculously good! This craze has attracted all sorts of people so it wasn’t surprising to be sitting alongside Charlize Theron and Stuart Townsend at the restaurant. Los Angeles is such a fun place to live! Always something new and fun to discover.

Thanks for reading and don’t forget to tune into this weeks J golf Phoenix International LPGA tournament!
